Bangkok's Taxi Colours Explained: What Red, Yellow, Green & Pink Mean

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, has exploded in the last 10 years when it comes to tourism. This vacation hub has also become the asian capital for tourists and for all the right reasons. The streets are filled with wild and vivid colours. The nightlife is exceptional, with a real capital that never sleeps and a corner for every type of tourist. Let's not even start about the Thai cuisine, which has engulfed the Asian cuisine scene with an extensive list of exotic tastes and spices.

However, we focus on taxis, and when it comes to this, they are definitely not disappointing. Unlike many cities around the world where taxis can have random colours, this is not the case. As we have previosly discussed in one of our articles, guiding you through the meaning behind the different taxi colours in Dubai, we will do the same in this article for the different taxi colours in Bangkok. Before we get into it, it is very important to mention that the colours of taxis reflect only ownership types and possible features and have nothing to do with different pricing. All rides are carried based on a set (per Kilometer) price.

Red Taxis (Solid Red)

These Taxis are not so special. What makes them different is that most of the drivers have their own taxi license; they are not associated with a company. Although they have their own taxi license, they do not have their own vehicle; they rent out taxis from other companies. Because of this, some people may not seem them as reliable or as good as the following group because they do not own their car, so the quality of the car is poor.

Yellow & Green Taxis (Two-Tone)

Yellow and Green taxis are argued to be offering some of the best services, but the reason will be disclosed soon enough. These taxis stand out because they are individually owned. Each driver owns their vehicle, taxi license, and schedule. Therefore, they work independently. As they are working for themselves and competing against taxi companies in a big city such as Bangkok, they need to stay competitive, and they do this by offering great customer service.

Pink Taxis

Pink taxis are widely recognized in Bangkok and are often associated with larger fleet operators such as Thai Taxi Cooperative and similar registered transport groups. These vehicles are typically company-owned rather than privately owned by the driver. Drivers rent the vehicle for a shift and must cover a daily rental cost before earning profit. Because they belong to organized fleets, pink taxis sometimes appear more uniform in branding. However, they operate under the same regulated meter system as all other taxis.

Orange Taxis

Orange taxis are typically linked to specific fleet operators such as Ratchaphruek Taxi Cooperative and other mid-sized taxi groups operating under registered transport companies in Bangkok. Like blue taxis, orange vehicles are company-owned and rented out to drivers on a daily basis. The bright colour helps distinguish that particular cooperative’s fleet on the road. There is no difference in base fare, service level, or passenger rights. The orange paint scheme is simply a visual identifier for the operating company.

Blue Taxis

Solid blue taxis in Bangkok are generally operated by fleet companies, one of the most commonly associated being Sahamit Taxi Cooperative and similar registered taxi cooperatives. These cooperatives own multiple vehicles and lease them to drivers who operate under their license. Blue taxis are part of the standard metered taxi system regulated by Thailand’s Department of Land Transport. The colour itself functions as company branding and cooperative identification rather than indicating a premium service or price difference. For passengers, a blue taxi works exactly the same as any other legal Bangkok taxi — same meter, same fare structure, same regulations.

Purple Taxis

Purple taxis are less common but are usually connected to smaller taxi cooperatives or specific registered fleet companies operating in Bangkok. These companies use purple as a branding tool to differentiate themselves from other fleets. As with all officially registered taxis, they are bound by the same fare regulations and oversight from Thailand’s Department of Land Transport.

Taxis in Bangkok

The different colours of the taxis are not as different as they may seem in terms of the services that they offer or their price. Bangkok is a lovely place that combines modern taxis with classic tuk-tuks or better known as Rickshaws, and motor scooters. This is why Bangkok is so beautiful for tourists, because it is very diverse in its culture and offers a taste for everyone's liking.
